5 White petals, 1/4" across (actually bracts surrounding the tiny flower) Flowers in an open cluster Perennial Plant 1 foot to 3 feet tall Found in dry fields and open woods Leaves sessile (no stems on leaves) Leaves alternate on smooth stem, but at top of stem, below flower, there is a whorl of 5 to 7 leaves. This is an excellent key to this plant. See annotated photos below. Sap will be milky white, but during dry spells, I have sometimes not seen any sap |
