OCVN August Meeting
We did a walk at Swan Creek for our August meeting. Dennis M took some amazing photographs. I am including one of his photos - a Summer Azure, we think, laying an egg. At least it is doing something interesting with its tail. An amazing photo !

Wild About Wildlife - June 15, 2013
OCVN volunteers were asked to help Lee Richter of Lucas County Extension with a table at the 2013 Wild About Wildlife. This is an annual event to both educate the public about wildlife and to act as a fund raiser for Nature's Nursery, a center for wildlife rehabilitation. (see link here for Nature's Nursery) . The topic was white-nose syndrome in bats. In this first photo we are setting up the table and getting displays and hand-outs ready.
A big brown bat from Nature's Nursery named Ferguson was the obvious star of the show. Katie was in charge of keeping our star performing bat happy.
Besides Ferguson, we also had the children balance a home-made foam bat with plastic insects to try to get the point across about how many insects a bat can eat in a day. Not scientifically accurate, but we also knew that most kids would like playing with plastic bugs.
Sunday Wildflower Walks at Oak Openings
Here is our first walk on April 14 - Great Group !!
Monthly Non-Sanctioned Nature Series Meeting
Lots of good information on Vernal Pools & Skunk Cabbage
A large thanks as always to Dennis M for opening his home to us, and in this case providing full disclosure before we entered.
Can't read the signs? scroll down for a closer look.
We may not have been sanctioned, but thanks to Eileen and Chris we did learn about vernal pools and skunk cabbage.
Besides her presentation, Eileen brought a few microscopes and a huge array of items to look at - creepy and fun !! Chris has been doing a skunk cabbage presentation for the Metroparks Toledo summer programs. She shared some of her methods. Awesome !! And we had a good time, as always. |
