What is this?We have seen this plant at Oak Opening, Wintergarden (Bowling Green), and Wildwood between May 25 and May 31, 2013.
The leaves are very grass-like and clasping the stem (see bottom right photo). It was found in borders and along edges of paths. |
Yellow Goat's Beard Tragopogon pratensis
A member of the Aster family, this flower is an import from Europe. Some varies of this family are also called Johnny-go-to-bed-at-noon (or Jack...) because the flower will often only be open in the morning and will close around mid-day. So if you see this plant in the afternoon or evening, the flower will often be closed. When this goes to seed, it makes a large dandelion like puff ball. Some people will pick them at that time and spray them with lacquer to make a home decoration.
There is also a Western Goat's Beard, which is paler than the Yellow, and has about 13 floral bracts, as opposed to the Yellow that has about 8 bracts. Also the flower bracts on the Western extend past the flower, while those on the Yellow are about even with the flower.
