On Friday May 2 Kim High had a Wild Friday walk at Oak Openings. The main topic was animals at twilight, but there were many things in nature to be seen. Lots of birds and a good sized herd of deer were seen. Kim was persistent in turning over logs to find some salamanders, and we were rewarded with a red-backed salamander.
Woodcock were heard, and a few people got glimpses of them flying, but they were not cooperating. Whip-poor-wills were calling also. Kim was able to call out to a barred owl who returned the call, and at the end we heard the faint call of a wild turkey.
There were also plants to be seen. Right at the parking lot Kim spied a Wood Anemone. March Marigold and Trillium were sighted along the trail. The highlight of the trip for me was when Kim guided us to a group of Birdfoot Violets. These are state listed and I was very thankful that Kim showed them to us.
